A Brief History
Extreme Sports Camp of Aspen was conceived by Aspen residents Sallie Bernard and Doug Gilstrap in 2001. Sallie is a parent of a teenager with autism and Doug has been instructing children with disabilities for over ten years. Dismayed by the lack of true sports camps for autistic children, they decided to develop a summer program. This evolved the following year into a prototype camp for four children on the autism spectrum. The concept was applied to a full camp program for two single-week sessions during the summer of 2004. In 2005, the program was extended to four single-week sessions. And in 2006, the program comprised six single-week sessions serving over 50 children and young adults with autism.
