Facility and Overnight Accommodations

party

Campers will be housed at the Aspen Camp School for the Deaf, located in Old Snowmass, Colorado. This summer marks 34 years for ACSD which is approximately 15 minutes south of Aspen.

The Aspen Camp School for the Deaf is beautiful, yet simple and rustic. Accommodations will vary depending the session. Campers and their parent/aide (if applicable) will be housed in either a 4 bedroom house or cabins on the property.  Campers can their own sleeping bag & pillow, but bed linens are provided.  A fully equipped kitchen and dining area will provide a daily hot breakfast, sack lunch and dinner.  Daily showers will also be provided if needed.  The campus sits in a rural area and is very quiet.

Most activities take place during the day away from the campus. Transportation for campers via vans is provided to and from all activities. Use of seatbelts will be required.

A parent or familiar aide supplied by the family is expected to bring the camper to ACSD on the first day of camp and take them home on the last day of camp. Depending upon the campers age & maturity level a family member or aide is expected to sleep in the room with the camper, as well as accompany and be responsible for him/her from 5:00 or 6:00 in the evening through 8:30-9:00 in the morning (if applicable). During the day, campers go off with buddies and the Camp Program Director.  Parents and aides are encouraged not to participate during these daily activities.

The premise behind an overnight approach with accompanying family member/aide if necessary is that campers learn how to be away from home in a supportive environment: experiencing a new set of buddies, peers, activities, and locales during the day but having a familiar aide or family member at night. For someone with an autism spectrum disorder who may be prone to anxiety when exposed to novelty, this “hybrid” approach provides a needed transition from family to greater independence. Campers may have the option of staying with family elsewhere in Aspen, but are encouraged to stay at the camp in the company of their peers.
